Modernization of intelligent traffic management in Porto

PROJECT SUMMARY
The rapidly growing metropolitan area of Porto faced increasing demands on transport infrastructure capacity, junction coordination and public transport integration. The existing transport system no longer allowed for a sufficiently flexible response to dynamically changing traffic situations and required a transition to a modern, adaptive and fully integrated mobility management.
The city therefore implemented a comprehensive transformation of the transport system with the aim of increasing traffic flow, optimizing traffic flows and streamlining public transport operations throughout the metropolitan area. The project became a key step towards the development of intelligent mobility and the construction of a data-driven transport infrastructure.
The project included the deployment of adaptive traffic management and the connection of traffic signals with public transport vehicles via V2X communication. On the BRT corridor, this technology was used to give priority to public transport vehicles at light-controlled intersections.

PROJECT GOALS
The aim of the project was to create a modern traffic control system enabling:
- Centralized management of large-scale intersection infrastructure
- Prioritizing public transport using V2X communication
- Interoperability between heterogeneous technologies
- Creating the basis for the future development of intelligent mobility

RESULT
The implementation of the V2X system within the 4 km long BRT corridor, which passes through 26 intersections and includes 7 stops, allows buses to be given priority at traffic light-controlled intersections. This allows a bus to travel the entire corridor in 11 minutes, including stops.
The result is higher traffic flow, more efficient coordination of the transport network and improved quality of public transport. At the same time, the system creates a long-term sustainable basis for the development of intelligent mobility and data-driven transport infrastructure.
Thanks to the modernization, Porto is among the cities with one of the most advanced traffic management systems in Portugal, which brings higher traffic flow, more efficient coordination of the entire network and better functioning of public transport.
