PROJECT SUMMARY

PROJECT SUMMARY

The increasing traffic load in Chennai has shown the limits of traffic signal control based on pre-set signal plans. These were unable to respond to the actual traffic flow, even though the situations at individual intersections change during operation and influence each other.

The Chennai Metropolitan Area Intelligent Transport Systems project therefore included the implementation of adaptive traffic signal control at 165 intersections. The individual intersections were to be connected to a central traffic control center and the control was to use current traffic data.

CROSS participated in the project by supplying 180 CROSS RS4S adaptive controllers, the eDaptiva system, the CROSS PTC programming tool and video traffic detection. The controllers provide traffic signal control at the intersections, while eDaptiva enables their central monitoring and adaptive control.

Current data from video detection is used to adjust the traffic signal control according to the traffic situation. Individual intersections are not controlled in isolation, but are part of a centrally monitored and adaptively controlled network.

PROJECT GOALS

PROJECT GOALS

  • Modernization of traffic light control at 165 intersections
  • Implementation of adaptive control based on current traffic data
  • Connection of intersections with a central traffic control center
  • Central monitoring and management of transport infrastructure
  • Utilization of current traffic situation data
  • Improvement of traffic management and awareness of road users
RESULT

RESULT

The project modernized a network of 165 intersections and connected them to a central traffic control center. 180 CROSS RS 4S adaptive controllers were deployed at the intersections together with video detection.

The eDaptiva system allows for central monitoring and control of the connected intersections and uses current data from video detection for adaptive traffic light control.

The result is an interconnected traffic infrastructure in which traffic light control, traffic detection and central monitoring are part of a single system. Thanks to adaptive algorithms, intersection control can continuously respond to the current traffic situation.

The project was implemented in 2024-2025 for Chennai Smart City Limited and represents one of the deployments of CROSS technology in the field of adaptive traffic control in India.

Technologies delivered in the project

Technologies delivered in the project

  • 180x CROSS RS4S traffic light controller
  • eDaptiva – a system for monitoring and adaptive traffic control
  • CROSS PTC – a tool for programming controllers (now eDita)
  • Video traffic detectors

Do you need to adaptively manage traffic in the city?

We will connect traffic detection, traffic light controllers and central control into one system.
