C-ITS in Zlín: How modern technologies are advancing the safety and efficiency of urban transport in our home city

CROSS Zlín, a.s. is launching an ambitious cooperative intelligent transport systems (C-ITS) project in its home city of Zlín. This innovative ITS project is planned for the next two years and aims to deploy C-ITS technology to improve the safety, fluidity, and efficiency of traffic in the city. The project focuses on real-time communication between vehicles, traffic infrastructure, and central traffic management systems.

What are Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS)?

C-ITS represent a modern generation of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) that enable mutual communication between vehicles (V2V), vehicles and infrastructure (V2I), and other transport subsystems (V2X) ensuring fast, safe, and reliable data exchange. These technologies are key for the development of smart city concepts and modern mobility.

Main benefits of the C-ITS project in Zlín:

  • Increased safety at railway crossings: The C-ITS infrastructure enables active warning of drivers and pedestrians of an approaching train via on-board units (OBU) and roadside units (RSU). This significantly reduces the risk of accidents at railway crossings.
  • Protection of vulnerable road users: Advanced detection of pedestrians and cyclists in risk zones and their early warning increases the safety of the most vulnerable road users and supports safe urban mobility.
  • Priority for public transport and integrated rescue system (IRS): Public transport and IRS vehicles equipped with OBU units communicate with RSU units at intersections. Thanks to the eDaptiva system, it is possible to dynamically control traffic lights, which ensures faster passage of these vehicles, improves traffic flow, and increases safety.
  • Adaptive traffic management: The central control system, which will be newly operated by the powerful new-generation traffic controller - CROSS RS 5, will allow for the adaptation of signal plans based on current traffic data. The result is fewer stops, shorter travel times, and reduced emissions.

Technology and system architecture

The project uses the aforementioned state-of-the-art technologies in the field of V2X communication, including DSRC and V2X protocols. Data is collected from integrated sensors and communicated between vehicles and the transport infrastructure, enabling immediate evaluation and adaptation of traffic management. The system is designed to meet European C-ITS standards and contribute to long-term sustainability and safety of transport.

Significance for the development of smart transport in Zlín

The implementation of the C-ITS project in Zlín represents an important milestone in the digitalization and modernization of urban transport. The implementation of these technologies will improve road safety, increase the efficiency of public transport, and support the development of smart city initiatives. Zlín is thus becoming a model for other cities that want to use the potential of cooperative intelligent transport systems.
