The first system of its kind in the Czech Republic: Smart P+R with motivation to use public transport

The statutory city of Ostrava has long been struggling with high traffic congestion in the city center, mainly due to individual car traffic. In order to increase the attractiveness of public transport and reduce traffic congestion, the city was looking for a solution that would be efficient, user-friendly and technologically innovative.

The first system of its kind in the Czech Republic: Smart P+R with motivation to use public transport

We designed and implemented an intelligent Park and Ride (P+R) system that motivates drivers to combine individual transport with public transport. The key innovation is the principle of reverse reward - the driver pays for parking, but if he uses public transport during the day (paying for it with the same card), the system automatically grants him a discount on parking when he leaves. The Hlučín loop in Ostrava is the first fully integrated P+R parking lot in the Czech Republic, which connects the transport and parking system on a single transaction basis. This approach sets a new standard in the field of urban mobility and the MaaS (Mobility as a Service) concept.

The system works on the principle of TAP-IN technology:

  • The driver places a card (payment or ODIS) on the reader upon arrival.
  • If he uses public transport during the day and places the same card as a ticket, the system automatically applies a discount on parkingwhen he leaves.
  • Everything is fully ticketless, without the need for registration or a mobile application.

Technology and benefits:

  • Contactless system with EMV tokenization – works with any regular payment card.
  • Integration with the ODIS transport system – including the ability to use the ODIS card as a virtual wallet.
  • Camera system with license plate recognition – comfortable and fast ticket-free passage.
  • Connection to the transport company’s dispatch center – for safe operation and quick response if necessary.
  • Online monitoring and usage statistics – the city has accurate data for planning transport and tariff policies.

Interesting facts about the project:

Parking and transport infrastructure in Ostrava shares a common transaction basis for the first time. A bank card or ODIS card functions here as a unified medium – for entry, payment and validation. This significantly increases the convenience of users and the efficiency of the entire system.
